The findings show that practicing yoga for eight weeks especially in stroke patients helps improve balance and flexibility, a stronger and faster gait, and increased strength and endurance. The research involved scientists from Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center in Indianapolis, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis and IU Bloomington. They observed how yoga contributed to helping elderly people recover from stroke. Each participant (male and female) had completed occupational therapy after a stroke and physical therapy before the study was conducted, but they still continued to have the disorder.
Arlene Schmid, rehabilitation scientist at Roudebush VA Medical Center, said the loss of functional strength, flexibility and endurance is something that commonly occurs after a stroke, which can cause long-term disability. “Doctors need methods to manage and improve the ability of post-stroke patients who have physical problems,” said Schmid, assistant professor of occupational therapy at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Science at IUPUI. From the results of the analysis the researchers found, practicing yoga provides advantages in functional strength, flexibility and endurance, as well as significant improvements in all areas. Yoga activities may have increased neuromuscular surveillance, which allows for improved strength in affected or unaffected limbs.
Tracy Dierks, professor of physical therapy at the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences, said the focus of this research analysis was to see how well study participants could return to running after participating in the program. Dierks reported, after the yoga program each participant showed better balance and a faster gait with long strides. However, even though the participants could walk faster, they could not maintain their speed for six minutes. “These findings have the potential to help the recovery process. Yoga interventions are designed to improve balance and we are not too focused on increasing walking speed,” Dierks said. The results of this study are based on a review of two recent studies which will be presented at the annual meeting at the American College of Sports Medicine in San Francisco.

The inactivity of GABA is also found in people with epilepsy, chronic pain, depression and anxiety. “Yoga is known to increase GABA activity so that stress symptoms are reduced,” he said. Other research published earlier this year shows yoga can be practiced as a preventive way to teach school children to control anger.
